FAQ

What exactly is SUPERWOOD?

SUPERWOOD is real wood, reengineered at the molecular level to unlock its full potential. Through a proprietary two-step process, InventWood modifies lignin and selectively removes hemicellulose before precision densification. This collapses the wood’s porous structure and realigns the cellulose fibers, bringing them close enough to form new chemical bonds. The result is a material that is 4-20x stronger and stiffer than natural wood, with 3-10x greater dent resistance, and fire resistance that can achieve a Class A rating.

Unlike steel or synthetic composites, SUPERWOOD maintains wood’s natural beauty, warmth, and ability to sequester carbon, while offering dramatically improved performance and durability. It can outperform steel in many applications, yet remains sustainable, locally sourced, and versatile across wood species and even bamboo.

What makes SUPERWOOD different from other engineered wood products?

Most engineered wood products rearrange pieces of wood and hold them together with adhesives. SUPERWOOD is different. It is wood restructured at the molecular level. Our patented two-step process modifies lignin, selectively removes hemicellulose, and then densifies the material to collapse its porous structure. This realigns cellulose nanofibers into a tightly bonded network, unlocking their full natural strength without synthetic resins.

The result is a material that is significantly stronger, stiffer, more dent- and fire-resistant than conventional wood, while preserving the natural beauty and sustainability of real wood. The technology is protected by 144 filed patents, with 41 granted and allowed.

When will SUPERWOOD be available?

Initial production is underway at our Frederick, Maryland facility, which is capable of producing over one million square feet of SUPERWOOD annually. Due to overwhelming demand and large-scale commitments, our production capacity for 2025 is fully allocated. The earliest availability for new orders is expected in 2026.

Our first products will focus on exterior applications such as cladding, decking, and dimensional planks. Deposits are fully refundable and secure your place in line as we scale up production.

Is SUPERWOOD suitable for fire-prone areas?

SUPERWOOD can achieve a Class A fire rating according to ASTM E84 standards, making it highly suitable for construction in fire-prone regions. The material meets rigorous fire resistance requirements and will be pursuing listing in the California State Fire Marshal's Building Materials Listing (BML) Program for Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) areas later this year. This certification is specifically for products used in fire hazard severity zones where urban development meets wildland areas. SUPERWOOD's fire-resistant and self-extinguishing properties help slow fire spread and protect structures, which may potentially offer insurance advantages in these high-risk regions.

Can SUPERWOOD be used in structural applications?

Yes, SUPERWOOD is engineered to deliver exceptional structural performance. Testing has shown strength and stiffness increases of 4 to 20 times compared to the starting wood, with significantly improved dent resistance and fire performance. This makes it well-suited for potential use in load-bearing applications and integration into systems such as CLT, Glulam, and other engineered assemblies.

And, SUPERWOOD is currently moving through the rigorous third-party testing and certification process required for full building code approval. In the meantime, we are prioritizing applications like siding, decking, and fencing, while working with engineers, testing labs, and early adopters to validate SUPERWOOD’s use in structural projects.

Can SUPERWOOD be painted, stained, or finished?

Yes, SUPERWOOD accepts most standard wood finishes including paints, stains, and clear coats. SUPERWOOD Interiors comes unfinished or with a refined finish for high-end applications.

How does SUPERWOOD perform in extreme weather conditions?

SUPERWOOD Exteriors excel in extreme weather, with SUPERWOOD Exteriors specifically engineered to withstand nature's harshest conditions. It offers superior UV and weather resistance, minimal dimensional change, such as swelling and warping, and resistance to degradation. SUPERWOOD Exteriors maintain its integrity through freeze-thaw cycles and temperature fluctuations, making it ideal for applications from tropical humidity to desert heat to arctic cold.

How does SUPERWOOD's cost compare to traditional materials?

Initially, SUPERWOOD is competitively priced against premium hardwoods, positioned as a high-end, sustainable material. As our production scales up to over 30 million square feet annually, we anticipate achieving cost parity with conventional building materials such as steel.

Does SUPERWOOD require special installation methods?

SUPERWOOD can be installed using standard woodworking tools and techniques. It can be cut, drilled, and fastened like premium hardwoods, though its density may require slightly modified techniques for optimal results. Detailed installation guides will be provided with purchased products.

What maintenance does SUPERWOOD require?

SUPERWOOD requires minimal maintenance compared to conventional wood. For exterior applications, periodic cleaning or refinishing is recommended but no special treatments, sealants, or preservatives are necessary. The material naturally resists fading, warping, and degradation.

Can I request samples of SUPERWOOD?

Sample kits will be available for purchase, with pricing information and details about how and when to order coming at a later date.

Where can I buy SUPERWOOD?

SUPERWOOD is currently in production at our Frederick, Maryland facility, but due to overwhelming demand our capacity for 2025 is fully allocated. The earliest availability for new orders is expected in 2026.
